What is Terrazzo Flooring?

Terrazzo is a composite material combining chips of marble, quartz, granite, or glass with a cement binder, polished to a smooth, glossy finish. Its monolithic nature ensures a seamless surface without visible lines, enhancing its durability, low maintenance, and design flexibility, making it suitable for both residential apartments and commercial spaces like hotels.

Step-by-Step Terrazzo Installation Process

In this guide, we have included a detailed, step-by-step process for installing terrazzo flooring using Rezomix.

Rezomix is a ready to use Terrazzo dry mix for easy and durable Terrazzo application. It can be directly mixed with water and applied on the base surface. You won't have to worry about the material ratio, composition or sourcing. Rezomix contains several additives to ensure durability and long life of the floor.
*Added Benefit - It is available in 50+ shades and comes with a polishing kit for long lasting sheen!

Tools/Equipment

Pro Tip

1. Surface Preparation

Clean the base surface to remove dust, grease, or loose material. Use either shot blasting or grinding for adhesion. Check for cracks and apply a flexible membrane if needed. Test moisture levels (below 75–80% relative humidity).

Shot blaster, grinder, moisture meter

In humid regions like Pune, we use a moisture mitigation system to prevent delamination.

2. Place Guiding Lines

Install divider strips (zinc, brass, aluminum, or plastic) to create a layout for color transitions or expansion joints, ensuring even thickness (10-15 mm for cementitious terrazzo).

Divider strips, for custom designs

Use 10x105-feet intervals in to minimize cracking.

3. Mixing White Cement Slurry

Mix white cement with water to form a thin, pourable slurry as a bonding layer.

Mechanical mixer, trowel

Mix thoroughly to avoid lumps, ensuring strong adhesion.

4. Apply the Slurry

Spread the slurry evenly over the wet substrate with a trowel to bond the terrazzo layer. Work quickly to maintain a wet edge.

Trowel

ply in sections for seamless bonding in smaller spaces.

5. Mix Rezomix Terrazzo

Mix Rezomix with water to get a thick and even paste. If mixing in a huge quantity, a mechanical mixer can be used for an even, lump-free mix. Otherwise, hand mixing is good for small batches.

Mechanical mixer

Add colored glass or mother-of-pearl for vibrant Jaipur hotel designs.

6. Spread the Terrazzo Mix evenly

Pour the mix onto the slurry, spread evenly with a trowel or roller to 10-15 mm thickness. Press firmly to eliminate voids,

Trowel, floor roller

Tap lightly to check for voids; fill gaps immediately to avoid weak spots.

7. Curing

Cure water puddling for 21 days to enhance strength. Maintain moisture to prevent cracking.

Curing sheets, water

Make bunds with cement and sand and then fill water.

8. Polishing

After 21 days of curing, apply Odus Hardener and leave for 12 hours. Next day, start grinding with diamond pads. Grind with grit no - 60, 100, 200.
After this, apply Odus Primer and leave for 12 hours. Next day - polish with grit no - 400, 800, 1500 and 3000.
* Odus Hardener and Odus Primer come along with Rezomix.

Floor grinder, diamond pads

Stop at 400–800 grit for a matt finish.

9. Sealing
(optional)

Clean with a neutral cleaner and electric scrubber. Apply two coats of water-based penetrating sealer, drying fully between coats.

Electric scrubber, sealer

Use a breathable sealer to allow moisture passage.

Can Terrazzo be Installed Over Existing Floors?

Terrazzo can be applied over existing concrete/ PCC/ old terrazzo surfaces.

The only pre-requisite from a base surface is that they are structurally sound, levelled and have a rough finish. The base must be clean, levelled, dry and free of cracks.

If the existing surface is smooth - then use hacking to make it rough.

Why is rough surface needed for terrazzo application?

If applied over a smooth surface - the adhesion between new and old layer would not be proper. Leading to reduced durability.

Can it be applied over vitrified tiles/ ceramic tile floor?

No. The tile surface is smooth and would not give the required bonding with the new terrazzo layer. Therefore, it is required to remove tiles before terrazzo application.

How to apply Terrazzo on vertical surfaces?

There are two major challenges with Terrazzo application on vertical surfaces:

  1. The wet paste might slip from the vertical surface during application.

  2. Polishing on vertical surface is a physically exhausting task - because it needs to be polished by using hand-held grinders.

To prevent the mixture from slipping:

For vertical applications, such as walls, Rezo-mix terrazzo can be used but requires reinforcement to ensure proper adhesion to the surface. Therefore, use a PP mesh or a Bombay mesh while applying Terrazzo on vertical surfaces.
Make sure it is tightly fastened to the base surface using nails and white cement slurry.

Point to note - It should not have undulations or loosely attached to the base surface. Otherwise, it will become visible on the surface after grinding.

Polishing on vertical Surfaces.

Polishing on vertical surfaces is challenging due to complex grinding operations. When grinding on the floor- a heavy and bigger machine can be used. Here gravity helps.

But while polishing on vertical surface - hand held grinders need to be used. Big grinders cannot be used as they become heavy to handle. Here the complete force needs to be applied by the operator, and it is therefore a tiring operation.

Also, using a smaller disk lead to inconsistency in finishing.

How to find applicators for Terrazzo Flooring?

With Rezomix, the application is easy. The applicator will just need to mix water - make a consistent paste and then apply an even layer.

Look for masons who work in - wall plastering/ floor tiling/ marble installation work. The only skill we need here is to apply the Rezo-mix paste in an even thickness.

If your mason is not confident about this - we can help by training them.

For polishing - look for people working for marble/ stone polishing. They are skilled to polish Terrazzo also. Our team will help you to explain the process to them.

If you are still unable to find a suitable applicator - let us know - we will try to help you find one from our network.

PS - We do not charge any commission from applicators. We will just connect you to them and then you can negotiate directly.

Can I apply terrazzo myself? (DIY terrazzo application)

Depends on your confidence. If you need, we can send you a kit to try it out! After all, there is only one way to find out!

How much does Terrazzo flooring cost?

Let’s break the overall cost into 3 parts - material cost, application cost and polishing cost.

As per August 2025, the tentative cost is as follows:

Material Cost for Terrazzo:

Rezo-mix costs between Rs 47 to Rs 60 per Kg - depending on the color choice. The dark shades are slightly costly.

The coverage for a levelled floor varies between 2 to 3 Kg per Sq ft.

Therefore, the overall material cost comes between - Rs 94 to Rs 180 per Sq ft.

Application Cost for Terrazzo:

Applicators can vary a lot when it comes to the cost of application. They usually check the site conditions, size of the project, urgency of application etc. to tell the price. Also, their costs depend on which time of the year you are getting the project done. For example - rates are almost double during festivals.

How to negotiate the application cost with Terrazzo Applicators?

A very good way to judge the cost and negotiate with them is to ask these questions:

  1. How many masons and how many helpers will they be deploying?

  2. How much is the per day charge for them? (refer min wages of your state for a benchmark)

  3. How many days would it take to finish the project?

Once you have these numbers, do the math and compare it with the per Sq ft cost.

Pro Tip: Even though you calculate the cost using the above parameters, never ever engage the on a per day basis! You will end up paying more and the project may get delayed indefinitely!

Polishing Cost for Terrazzo:

The rates by polishers also vary depending on various parameters - just like applicators.

A good negotiation tactic is always to ask for a breakup of costs.

Polishing of about 1500 Sq ft - should not take more than 3 days.

Why Choose Terrazzo?

  • Monolithic Surface: Terrazzo forms a seamless, continuous surface without visible joints, enhancing its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.

  • Longevity: Highly durable, terrazzo withstands heavy use, making it ideal for long-term applications.

  • Eco-Friendly: Utilizes recycled materials like marble, quartz, or glass chips, promoting sustainability.
